Expatriate tax jobs are effectively personal tax jobs for expatriates. The most common are US expatriate tax jobs and these are prevalent in London, Zurich, Geneva, India, Canada, Hong Kong, Sydney and Singapore. There are also a significant number of Japanese expatriate tax jobs in the US and UK.
The phrase expatriate tax jobs is often abbreviated to expat tax jobs. It may also be referred to as global mobility jobs. Originally the global mobility term was used primarily by banks and large multinationals, where the job-holder would be responsible for a combination of tax and HR issues for a mobile workforce. However, global mobility jobs is now a phrase also used by some of the larger accounting firms and encompasses opportunities for both tax and HR professionals.

Expatriate Tax Jobs are often dual handler roles. This means that the role involves advising on a combination of two taxes. For example a dual handler in London would advise clients on both UK and US personal taxes. A dual handler in Zurich would advice on Swiss and US taxes.
There are also a lot of US-only expatriate tax jobs. Tax professionals focussing purely on US high net worth individuals or large US corporate's mobile workforce tend to study for the Enrolled Agent examination. An enrolled agent is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by either passing a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns, or through experience as a former IRS employee.
Many of the Big 4 firms in the US outsource their US tax compliance work to their sister offices in India, which is why there is a large concentration of US expatriate tax jobs in the larger Indian cities.
