About Large Business:

Large Business (LB) secures the tax compliance of around 2000 of the largest UK and global firms. Large Business National Compliance (LBNC) has a purpose to lead innovation and improvement in our approach to identifying, developing and managing LB’s and HMRC’s tax risk priorities.

LBNC provides key national direction, leadership and support to LB and Customer Compliance Group (CCG) teams to implement these priorities. Our drive is that LB and CCG secure across all our customers the right tax at the right time in the most effective and cost efficient way.

LBNC works in partnership with LB regions, LB Corporate Centre and others as needed to ensure that our resources and skills are deployed appropriately to drive LB’s compliance strategy and ensure it fits with both CCG and HMRC compliance strategies.

Job description

This is a high-profile VAT Investigator role for HMRC’s largest VAT Strategic Risks and is a chance for you to add value to HMRC’s Large Business Strategy. The role involves strategic and technical capability to assist caseworkers to progress enquiries to delivery, primarily in Legal Interpretation, Boundary Pushing and Uncertain Tax Treatment VAT risk areas. We are looking for a dynamic individual to lead quality investigations and to work collaboratively with the Legal Interpretation and Boundary Pushing team.

You will provide technical leadership and support to colleagues at a national and where appropriate, customer level. Highly confident and credible, you'll share your knowledge, experience and skills gained in a VAT compliance or policy environment with Customer Compliance Managers, Tax Specialists and Policy Professionals.

The successful candidate will also be encouraged to develop their VAT knowledge and leadership/management skills through appropriate learning programmes.

Responsibilities

•Assisting teams to address VAT Key and National Risk Management Framework (RMF) Legal Interpretation risks and driving forward other technical VAT risks related to VAT Legal Interpretation, Boundary Pushing and Uncertain Tax Treatment (UTT) issues.
•Playing a key role in the development and delivery of VAT compliance strategies with a focus on innovation and continuous improvement.
•Building and managing relationships with senior departmental stakeholders in policy and across CCG.
•Working with SCS RMF Lead, the VAT G6 Strand leads, other G6 and G7 colleagues and LB National Compliance in providing technical leadership.
•Working closely with CCG colleagues to ensure alignment between HMRC risk strategies in terms of risk prioritisation, governance and reporting.
•Promoting data led compliance by using departmental systems to target risks.

Person Specification:

•Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with colleagues
•Have good verbal and written communication skills.

Essential Criteria:

•Demonstrate a strong background in VAT compliance work
•Applicants are required to be fully VAT trained, having completed one of the Departments recognised internal VAT training programmes; (VAT Foundation, Basic VAT Training, Routeway, BDDP or equivalent), or have proven experience of working in VAT as an advisor or in-house VAT specialist. You must have up-to-date knowledge of VAT legislation
•Evidence of working collaboratively with different stakeholders on technical issues across teams and other boundaries
•Be able to demonstrate taking a major role in resolving complex VAT issues, while considering the wider impact of decisions.
•Experience of supporting capability build by identifying knowledge gaps and taking steps to increase technical knowledge of self and others.
